How does a text to speech converter work ?

A text to speech converter is a device which converts text into audio format. A text to speech converter basically combines phonemes which are basic sound units to construct a human recognizable sound. When a text file is fed , the text to speech converter picks a sequence of words and then uses the phonemes to produce a voice reproduction of the text. The text can also be directly entered into the text to speech converter by using a keyboard attached to it.

The text to speech converter has a wide range of applications

  • It can be used as an alternative for braille since this is very easy to use and also requires very little effort from the user. By using a text to speech converter any recently published book can be read by them without waiting for the braille edition by just scanning the pages and then feeding them into the text to speech converter.

  • An advanced version of the text to speech converter can be developed to translate a text from one language into another language into audio format. This may prove very helpful for travelers when they go to a country where they don't know the native language.

  • It can also be used by people having speaking difficulties to just type the text they want to speak so that the text to speech converter can reproduce their text into speech.
